The Neuroprosthetic

It was with profound sadness that I held,
in a little jar of formaldehyde,
the last piece of my organic brain
replaced now with a prosthetic.

When I was a young man, before any replacement,
I tried to imagine what it must be like,
as a mind,
to have one's brain severed
in one quick motion,
bisected between the two lobes.

Certainly a glimmer of the mind would persist,
I thought, in both sides of the brain.
Two glimmers,
both probably confused.

It was with great gratitude and honor I was able to handle an actual brain about two weeks ago. Dr. Edward Kernick from UNC's pathology department gave me a private gross anatomy lecture, he answered a slew of other wild questions I had too. Then he signed out a prosthetic brain for me which I have molded into, foam latex, wax, plaster and jeltrate(the stuff dentists mold your teeth with). I used a hollow sculpture of a brain in my final installation project. I filmed a stream of consciousness video mirroring memory and experience and put it on mp3 video player which I embedded into the sculpture. People experiencing my installation would pick up the brain and peer into eye holes and metaphorical see the thoughts of who the brain was a part of. The rest of the installation led towards voyeur. It was a success, I video-documented it and as soon as I can I will make an Installation Video and post it online to share with the world! I love brains.
